A dear friend of mine, Saber, invited me out to watch England play against Croatia in the Semi-Final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Russia.
Given England's incredible success rate in this tournament, and the street celebrations I had seen with their win against Colombia, and Sweden - I had a lot of faith in England to defeat Croatia on their way to the finals, and was eager to see the celebrations for myself in person.
Devastatingly however, England lost to Croatia 2-1, and the entire pub had been a large mixture of anger, confusion, horror, and sadness; all deeply woven together with a blanket of colourful language. One person grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed it everywhere. Another person started smacking and punching the walls. And another gentleman took a seat and started crying.
It felt like the environment was going to turn into mayhem, so me and Saber agreed to get out of there immediately. Upon leaving, we saw that the fans took to the streets to express their frustrations, creating scenes I thought I would never capture in my lifetime.
Blimey, if this is how London reacted, I can't even begin to imagine what the scenes in Russia must be like.
